‘New Jack City’ Sequel In The Works, ‘Snowfall’ Actor Malcolm M. Mays To Serve As Screenwriter

(TIML NEWS) One has to wonder if Wesley Snipes or Ice T will reprise their iconic roles.

Nostalgia seems to be at an ultra-light speed these days with classics like Set It Off and Boomerang getting flipped for TV or the big screen. Next on the list of reimagined classics is an official sequel to New Jack City.

Deadline reports the neo-noir drama will reportedly include writing from Snowfall actor and filmmaker Malcolm M. Ways. Over the years, Mays has racked up critical acclaim for not only his acting chops but his directorial vision.

His first film Trouble was released in 2007 and touched on rivalries of Black and Latinx groups in South Central Los Angeles. He recently penned the Warner Bros. adaptation of Lezley McSpadden with Lyah Beth LeFlore’s book Tell the Truth Shame the Devil: The Life, Legacy and Love of My Son Michael Brown. Currently, the film is being pushed with the title Ferguson.

He’s also the writer and director of Overbrook Entertainment’s (Will Smith, Jada Pinket Smith) film Flint based on the city’s water crisis.

“It’s actually a sequel, not a remake-reboot,” he said while clarifying the New Jack City project.”[I] guess the cats out the bag now. It’s an honor.” Mays is also the nephew of Stanely “Tookie” Williams, the creator of the Crips gang in Los Angeles who turned into an author during his life prison. He also was nominated for A Nobel Peace Prize four times for his anti-gang initiatives.

The original New Jack City was released in 1991 and grossed $47.6 million. Directed by Mario Van Peebles and written by Thomas Lee Wright, the film was a fresh take on gangster films with stars like Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, Chris Rock, Flavor Flav, Allen Payne, Judd Nelson and Peebles giving life (or in Pookie’s case, drugs) to their lives. It isn’t known if any of the original cast will return for the sequel.

The film also starred several R&B stars like the late Nick Ashford and Christopher Williams.
