(TIML NEWS) China’s censors have officially cracked down on hip-hop culture, calling it “vulgar” and banning it on TV, reports Chinese news network Sina.
Actors with tattoos or what regulators deem as “hip hop culture, sub-culture (non-mainstream culture) and dispirited culture (decadent culture)” have been banned from television in the country.WTF SMH
The take-down is largely directed at the massively popular Rap of China program, which has been sanctioned as a result of these new censorship laws. Rap of China was viewed more than 2.5 billion times in 2017 on China’s largest video streaming website, IQiyi.
Prominent rapper GAI was also removed from Hunan TV’s hit show Singer. Clips of the rapper from China Hunan TV’s official Youtube Channel were removed without explanation. Another well-known rapper, PG One, were forced to apologize earlier this month after one of his songs, titled “Christmas Eve,” was criticized for promoting drug culture and insulting women.
According to the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China (SAPPRFT), which controls Chinese media, the ban aimed to prevent actors “whose heart and morality are not aligned with the party and whose morality is not noble.”
The Communist Part of China has “stepped up” its censorship regulations under the current president Xi Jinping, according to the Washington Post. Jinping has routinely blacked out news services like CNN, CNBC and the BBC from the country since taking power in 2012. Sound off below because of this!!!
