“IT” Smashes Box Office Records With $123.1M Opening

(TIML NEWS) The anticipated big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s IT smashed records at the box office during its opening weekend.

According to reports, the R-rated horror film earned a whopping $123.1 million at 4,103 locations, becoming the third-largest opening weekend of 2017. Only Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earned more this year.

IT also broke the record for largest September debut, previously held by Hotel Transylvania 2, which opened with $48.5 million in 2015; and became the biggest opening weekend by a horror or supernatural film — Paranormal Activity 3 took in $52.6 million in 2011. Finally, IT is second for all R-rated movie launches, behingd Deadpool, which opened in 2016 with $132.4 million.

In 46 overseas markets, the movie earned another $62 million, bringing its global debut to $185 million.

The box office haul was huge, given IT had an estimated $35 million production budget.

IT also received positive reviews, including 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ CinemaScore.

The movie was directed by Andy Muschietti, known for the 2013 horror film Mama. Actor Bill Skarsgard stars as Pennywise the Clown, who terrorizes young children in Derry, Maine.
