(TIML NEWS) According to CBS News, the United States has dropped a bomb on an ISIS cave complex in Afghanistan. The bomb contained 11 tons of explosives, and is called a Massive Ordnance Air Blast or GBU-43. Another nickname that the bomb was given is the “mother of all bombs.”
According to a Pentagon spokesperson, the weapon is the largest non-nuclear bomb in the United States’ arsenal, and the bomb had never been used before until this point. The U.S. command in Afghanistan gave more clarity on what the purpose of the strike was, saying, “The strike was designed to minimize the risk to Afghan and U.S. forces conducting clearing operations in the area while maximizing the destruction of ISIS fighters and facilities.” Press Secretary Sean Spicer attempted to smooth over backlash at the White House daily press briefing, saying the U.S. “took all precautions necessary” to make sure there were no civilian deaths.
Sean Spicer did not note whether President Trump gave the nod of approval for the use of the GBU-43. According to CBS, the Afghanistan strike had been planned for a few months.
