Just when you think it couldn’t get any messier for Apollo Nida and Phaedra Parks, it does.
If you tuned in to this season of the ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta,’ been reading the blogs or just plain don’t live under a rock, you’ve heard the chatter of Apollo and Phaedra’s recent legal woes due to Apollo’s highly questionable financial practices.
Apollo, husband of reality TV star Phaedra Parks, was arrested in January and subsequently plead guilty to several charges in a fraud scheme (including conspiracy to commit mail, wire and bank fraud) on May 6 and has been sentenced to eight years in prison.
According to prosecutors, since 2009, Nida and his co-conspirators stole checks and used stolen identities to file fraudulent tax returns and fraudulent claims against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to the tune of millions from at least 50 people over a period of four years.
Nida was finally caught after a year-long investigation by the U.S. Secret Service. Authorities were able to gather crucial evidence due, in large part, to the cooperation of co-conspirator Gayla St. Julien after her arrest and subsequent plea deal.
As part of this deal, St. Julien, who has previously served prison time, for identity theft no less, flipped on Nida and agreed to let agents record their phone conversations.
Federal prosecutors stated Tuesday that the 35-year-old has also been ordered to pay restitution to victims of this scheme during his sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court in Atlanta.
A hearing on July 17 will determine how much restitution Nida will pay to his victims.
This will be the second prison bid for Nida, who previously served five years in a federal prison for auto title fraud before marrying Parks in 2009.
