Military Plane Crashes in Southern California Neighborhood, Homes Damaged, None Injured


A military AV-8B Harrier plane crashed in a residential neighborhood in Imperial Valley, San Diego County Wednesday afternoon, setting ablaze at least one home and causing damage to others.

According to officials with the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, the plane went down in a front yard of a home, and damaged three other homes in the process. The pilot ejected safely and no one on the ground was injured.

A witness described the incident,

“A mushroom cloud of black and red smoke rose above one house with a collapsed roof. The garage of the house next door was on fire.”

He went on to say he saw a woman crying outside saying,

“That’s my house!”

Another witness reported that she was woken by the physical impact.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
