Happy 85th Birthday, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s would be celebrating his 85th birthday today, had he not been assassinated on April 4, 1968.

Today, would have marked civil rights leader and American hero Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 85th birthday.  Sadly, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, a few months after his  39th birthday. His life’s work transformed into a legacy of peaceful protest and love for your fellow-man regardless of color or background. His memory is still alive and well and was commemorated at the 50th Anniversary of The March on Washington in Washington, D.C., in the late summer of 2013.

In honor of Dr. King’s 85th birthday, here are 5 “Fun Facts ” about him:

1. Dr. King was interviewed by Playboy Magazine in 1965.

2. As a child, Dr. King sang with his church choir at the 1939 Atlanta premiere of the movie Gone with the Wind.

3.  Dr. King’s legal name at birth was Michael King, Jr. His father changed both their names on a trip to Berlin during 1934 in honor of Martin Luther, a German reformer.

4. He got his 1st college degree at 19 from Morehouse College with a bachelor’s degree is Sociology.

5. Dr. King got a C in public speaking during his first year at seminary.
